AMA Supermoto: Round 1 At Fontana May 3, 2006

The first round of the AMA Supermoto Series got underway at the California International Speedway in Sunny Southern California and saw the Supermoto and Supermoto Unlimited class podiums bathed in Orange.

Kurt Nicoll and Jurgen Kunzel were poised and ready to strike as the two Red Bull KTM HMC riders qualified fourth and sixth, putting Nicoll on the front line. The first Supermoto race blasted off from the grid and Nicoll immediately put himself in third to battle it out with the likes of Jeff Ward and Doug Henry, while teammate Kunzel quickly moved into the top spots early in the race where he finished second. Nicoll finished right behind him in third.

For the second race, the starting grid was the same as in the first race and again the Red Bull KTM HMC riders jockeyed for position and Nicoll moved into third and Kunzel was sixth. Nicoll managed to move into second, but due to lapped traffic, Jeff Ward got around him in the dirt second. Kunzel, determined to catch the riders in front, stalled his engine and restarted in last position. Not one to quit, he hammered down and made his way up to eleventh, while Nicoll placed third.

In the Unlimited class, young Benny Carlson qualified for the front row, and screamed down the starting line, putting himself in the top spot right away. Riding strong and confident, Carlson placed first, while teammate Johnny Lewis placed an uncontested third in his first-ever Unlimited race.
