Drag Racing: Turner Blasts Through Eliminations For Victory In Texas April 25, 2006
Jay Turner used four solid quarter-mile passes Sunday to claim his first Top Fuel victory of the 2006 Screamin’ Eagle championship AHDRA season.
Turner rode his quickest pass at the end of the day, beating Joe Timmons in the final round of the Rucker Performance Lonestar Nationals Presented by Drag Specialties at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas.
Turner rode his Mancuso Harley-Davidson-sponsored Top Fuel entry to a 6.544-second pass at 210.50 to beat Timmons’ 7.114 at 171.53 on the ultra-quick, all-concrete quarter-mile facility. Turner’s time was the low E.T. of the weekend. Turner beat Phoenix event winner Doug Vancil in the first round (6.695 over 8.852), Dale Nungesser in the second round (6.629 at 193.96) and Gainesville, Fla., event winner Mike Romine in the semifinal round (6.589 over 6.698).
Turner qualified in the No. 3 spot for eliminations, using a 6.639 pass. Tommy Grimes was the top qualifier of the weekend with a 6.594 at 223.28. The speed was good enough for the speed record, but Grimes lost in the first round and failed to back up the record.
In the Destroyer category, Tripp Nobles earned his second consecutive victory for Las Vegas Harley-Davidson and took over the points lead in the category. Nobles beat Jeff Stevens in the final round with a 9.471 pass at 140.11, easily topping Stevens’ 9.595 at 135.59. With a 9.334 pass, Nobles also earned the No. 1 qualifying award for the second consecutive event.
Teammates Donnie Huffman and Charlie Walker faced off in the SEP finals Sunday, with Huffman walking away with the trophy. Huffman used an 11.509 pass to beat Walker’s 11.698. Huffman was the low qualifier of the event with a best qualifying time of 11.502.
Dan DeGood continues to make the most of his retirement season as he earned the ET victory this weekend. DeGood went 11.379 to beat Roberta Seaman’s red-light start.
The next AHDRA event is the Gypsy Rendezvous Nationals in St. Louis, May 6-7.
